Gift subscriptions.
Sell subscriptions as gifts with configurable durations and branded recipient emails. The buyer pays upfront, the recipient gets a redemption link, and Daima ships the subscription on the schedule you configured.
This is a Pro feature. Gift subscriptions are part of the Daima Pro plan ($9.99/mo flat). Free merchants can read this doc as a preview and upgrade from Billing in the admin nav. Free vs Pro details →
How a gift subscription works
The buyer purchases a gift through your store's checkout. They pay the full amount upfront — there's no recurring billing on the buyer's card. Daima generates a gift record, sends a branded redemption email to the recipient via Resend, and ships the deliveries on the configured cadence (e.g., once a month for 3 months).
When the gift's final delivery completes, the gift is marked completed and stops shipping. The recipient can then choose to start a regular paid subscription on their own — Daima doesn't auto-convert the gift into a paid subscription against their card.
Enable gift subscriptions
Open Gift Subscriptions in the admin nav and configure:
- Enable gift subscriptions — toggles the gift purchase option in your storefront flow
- Durations — which gift lengths buyers can choose. Default is [3, 6, 12] months. Add or remove durations as needed.
- Allow personal message — gives the buyer an optional text field to write a message that prints in the recipient email
- Payment model — defaults to
upfront(buyer pays the full gift amount at checkout). This is the only model supported in V1.
The buyer's experience
On a product page where gifting is enabled, the buyer sees a "Send as a gift" option next to the regular subscribe widget. Selecting it opens a form where they enter:
- Recipient name
- Recipient email
- Optional personal message (if you enabled it)
- Delivery date for the redemption email — today, or any future date (birthdays, anniversaries, holidays)
- Gift duration — picks from the durations you configured
They check out via Shopify's standard checkout. The full gift amount is charged upfront against their card. After checkout, Daima creates a gift record in created status.
The recipient's experience
On the configured delivery date, Daima sends the recipient a branded email via Resend. The email includes the gift sender's name, the personal message (if any), the gift duration, and a redemption link.
When the recipient clicks the redemption link, they land on a Daima-hosted redemption page that asks them to log in to or create a Shopify account on your store. Once authenticated, the gift is bound to their account — they receive each delivery on the cadence you configured.
The gift lifecycle
From the merchant side, every gift moves through these states:
- Created — gift purchased; redemption email scheduled (or already sent if delivery date is "today")
- Sent — redemption email delivered to recipient. Click Mark sent manually if you need to override timing.
- Active — recipient has redeemed; deliveries are running on schedule. Click Mark delivered after each shipment goes out — Daima decrements
deliveries_remaining. - Completed — the final delivery has been recorded. The gift period is over.
Why "mark delivered" is manual. Daima doesn't automatically decrement deliveries because shipping happens off-platform — you ship via your fulfillment provider, then come back to Daima to log it. The manual step keeps the gift's progress in sync with what actually shipped, not what was scheduled.
What happens after the gift ends
When the final delivery completes, the gift transitions to completed status. Daima does not automatically charge the recipient's card or convert the gift into a paid subscription — that would be a billing surprise.
The recipient is, however, now a registered customer on your store with their account, address, and product preference attached. If they want to continue receiving the product after the gift period ends, they can subscribe through your normal Subscribe & Save flow. Their account history (including the gift) is preserved.
Designing a useful gift program
- Lead with the 3-month gift. Lower price point, lower commitment for the buyer, often the highest-converting duration. The 12-month gift is for known relationships (parents, partners).
- Make the recipient email feel like a brand moment, not a transaction. The gift email is the recipient's first encounter with your brand — invest in the design. The Resend integration lets you customize the template.
- Schedule, don't deliver immediately. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries are gift-buying moments. Surface the future-delivery option prominently in your buy form.
- Follow up with the recipient near the end of the gift period. A "Your gift is ending — want to continue?" email 2 weeks before final delivery converts gift recipients into paid subscribers at meaningfully higher rates than waiting until after the gift ends.
